Advent Candyland

When I asked our kids what they wanted to do in our large room Sunday School event this year, one of the things they wanted to do was play Candyland. No, I'm not kidding. They want to play a board game that has nothing to do with Christianity.

Or at least, that's what they thought. I'm thinking about how I could make this a gmae about Christmas -- or more specifically -- Advent. Istead of colors, I'm thinking about using symbols (or warning signs including road signs, a candle, an angel, a manger and a star). I'm not quite sure how to make this interactive so it's not simply moving an object around a board. I'm thinking about throwing some trivia on a couple of the spots so that they learn something about the Christmas story. I'm not sure how to create the sense of waiting and journey that (for me) is so important during the season. So, now, I ask of your wisdom for my crazy idea. What would you add?

Instead of using the game board you could make the path on the room floor with poster board or construction paper if the room is big enough.

you could have folks playing differtn characaters along the way with whom the kids could interact

the kids could play the game in costume as well

Give Kids the World had a life-sized candyland game for their anniversary month--it was really cool to play. I second th nomination for a full sizer!

"rest stops" -- you have to rest and wait somehow - -maybe while you wait you hear part of the story.

adventure - -prhaps you describe what it might be like to be on the animals traveling to the manger or seeing the star

starting point nazareth, end point bethlehem, stretching the game out, somehow (kp's rest stops idea is a good one) so they don't get to bethlehem until christmas eve or at least advent 4?

and what are the sweet things the incarnation brings into our lives? how could you represent those with symbols that the kids collect along the way?

That's a great idea! And I like the full size too.

At some stops you can have things they have to do, for example get things, find out things etc. All depending on what resources and possibilities you have. Let us know how it's going!
